The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced its intention to develop an airport in Myanmar’s Sagaing Division.

Officials said that the AAI signed an agreement with the Indian Government’s Ministry of External Affairs to begin preparations for phase one of Kalaymyo Airport’s development.

Poor infrastructure in Kalaymyo Airport

The airport is located around 70km east of the border with India’s Mizoram state and is very close to the border with Chin State.

The airport is operated by the Myanmar Government.

Sagaing is home to several northeast Indian rebel groups like the NSCN and the PLA of Manipur. ■
